The Harling’s Guide to Natural vs Lab-Grown Diamonds
What is a naturally grown diamond?
A marvel of nature. A diamond is created when carbon deposits in the earth’s crust are subject to high temperature and pressure over millions of years, bonding together and crystallizing beneath the Earth’s crust. Natural diamonds do not grow in a controlled environment, so they are subject to varying degrees of clarity, colour, and cut.
What is a lab grown diamond?
A lab grown diamond is put through the same circumstances as a naturally grown diamond, just in a controlled laboratory environment. They are composed of the same materials and share identical optical, chemical, and physical properties as naturally grown diamonds. Which is essentially pure carbon crystallized in an isotropic 3D form.
Are lab grown diamonds real?
Since they share the same attributes as natural diamonds, the Gemological Institute of America and the International Gemological Institute can give certification to them, and you cannot tell the difference between lab grown and natural diamonds without the use of speciality equipment.
The Benefits of Lab Grown Diamonds
- More affordable
- They are genuine diamonds
- Varying amounts of internal inclusions that create uniqueness
- They cannot be detected as synthetic by naked eye
- Come with GIA or IGI certification
Some things to consider
- Resale value is not as high for lab grown diamonds
- They are not as rare
- The manufacturing process requires large amounts of energy
