Choosing a diamond is a personal decision, and today there are more options than ever. One of the most common questions we hear at Harling’s is: What is the difference between a natural diamond and a lab-grown diamond?
The short answer? Both are real diamonds. The difference is where they come from.
Natural diamonds are formed deep within the earth over billions of years, while lab-grown diamonds are created using advanced technology in a controlled laboratory environment. Both are made of crystallized carbon and have the same fundamental chemical, physical and optical properties.
So which is right for you? Understanding the differences between natural and lab-grown diamonds can help you make a confident decision based on what matters most to you.
What Is a Natural Diamond?
A natural diamond is formed deep within the earth under extreme heat and pressure over billions of years. Over an immense period of time, carbon atoms crystallize into the diamond structure we know today.
Natural diamonds are brought to the surface through mining and then carefully cut and polished to reveal their brilliance.
Every natural diamond is unique. Many people are drawn to natural diamonds because of their extraordinary age, natural formation and the story behind a stone that existed for billions of years before becoming part of their jewellery.
What Is a Lab-Grown Diamond?
A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond created using advanced technology that replicates the conditions required for diamond formation.
There are two primary methods used to create lab-grown diamonds: Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD) and High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT).
The result is a diamond with the same fundamental chemical composition and physical properties as a natural diamond. Lab-grown diamonds can be cut into the same shapes and evaluated using the same familiar characteristics, including the 4Cs: cut, colour, clarity and carat weight.
Lab-grown diamonds are not diamond simulants such as cubic zirconia or moissanite. They are diamonds.
Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Real Diamonds?
Yes.
This is one of the most common questions we receive.
A lab-grown diamond has the same fundamental carbon crystal structure as a natural diamond and exhibits the characteristic brilliance, fire and durability associated with diamond.
The distinction is origin, not whether the stone is a “real” diamond.
A gemologist or specialized equipment can identify whether a diamond is natural or laboratory-grown, but to the unaided eye, a high-quality lab-grown diamond can look indistinguishable from a natural diamond with comparable characteristics.
Do Natural and Lab-Grown Diamonds Look Different?
Not necessarily.
Both natural and lab-grown diamonds can be beautifully cut and exhibit exceptional brilliance. When comparing individual diamonds, cut quality has a significant impact on how bright and lively a diamond appears.
This is why we recommend looking beyond whether a diamond is natural or lab-grown and considering the individual characteristics of the stone.
The 4Cs, cut, colour, clarity and carat, remain important when evaluating either type of diamond.
Why Do Lab-Grown Diamonds Typically Cost Less?
One of the biggest differences between natural and lab-grown diamonds is price.
Because lab-grown diamonds can be produced in a controlled environment and are not limited by the natural supply of diamonds formed within the earth, they are generally available at a lower price than comparable natural diamonds.
For some clients, this means choosing a larger diamond within their budget or allocating more of their budget toward the setting, craftsmanship or other jewellery.
For others, the rarity, age and natural origin of a mined diamond are an important part of its appeal.
Neither choice is inherently better. It comes down to what you value most.
Which Diamond Is Right for You?
There is no universal answer.
A natural diamond may be right for you if you value:
- The natural origin and geological history of your diamond
- The rarity of a naturally formed stone
- The idea that your diamond is billions of years old
- The traditional diamond-buying experience
A lab-grown diamond may be right for you if you value:
- The opportunity to purchase a larger diamond within your budget
- The value offered by a lab-grown diamond
- The fact that it is a real diamond with the same fundamental composition and properties
- Having more budget available for the setting or other jewellery
For many couples, the decision ultimately comes down to what makes the diamond feel right for them.
What About Sustainability?
Sustainability is an important consideration for many diamond buyers, but it is also an area where context matters.
Lab-grown diamonds avoid traditional diamond mining, but producing them still requires energy and resources. The environmental impact can vary depending on how a diamond is produced and the energy used in the process.
Natural diamond mining also has environmental and social considerations, which is why responsible sourcing and industry standards are important.
Rather than assuming that one category tells the entire story, we encourage clients to ask questions about where their diamond comes from, how it was produced and what documentation accompanies it.
Do Lab-Grown Diamonds Have a Certificate?
Quality diamonds, whether natural or lab-grown, can be accompanied by a grading report from an independent gemological laboratory.
A grading report documents important characteristics such as carat weight, colour, clarity, cut and measurements, while also identifying whether the diamond is natural or laboratory-grown.
When purchasing a significant diamond, we recommend understanding the documentation that accompanies your stone and reviewing its specifications with a knowledgeable jewellery professional.
Natural or Lab-Grown: Which Is Better?
Neither is automatically better.
The right diamond is the one that aligns with your priorities, your budget and what you want your jewellery to represent.
Some people love the history and rarity of a natural diamond. Others appreciate the accessibility and value of a lab-grown diamond. Both can become beautiful, meaningful pieces of jewellery that are worn and cherished for years to come.
